“Hey, Tommy!” He called to the younger version of himself.

The nine-year old still seemed weary of his presence, but approached. “I told you, Mister. I don’t talk to strangers.”

“And that’s very smart,” Older-Tommy nodded. “But, I need you to talk to someone who’s not a stranger. Okay?” Having definitely confused his childish counterpart, he continued. “There’s a boy named Merton in your class, his lockers right next to yours. It always will be.”

“Who?”

Tommy rolled his eyes; he hated getting that reaction. “Merton Dingle, he has spiky black hair, dresses kinda weird, doesn’t hang out with anyone else. I need you to do me a favor and look out for him. He gets picked on a lot.”

The boy looked over his shoulder, down the hall where young-Merton was being cornered by mini-T’n’T. “Why do you want me to do that?”

“He doesn’t have anyone. And one day he might be able to help you, too. Trust me, okay?” He wanted to help his friend, make his life just a little bit better. What could it hurt? He could hear Merton’s voice coming from around the corner, yelling something about finding the Russian, and he knew he needed to end this conversation now. “I’ve got to go, but can you please promise me that?”

“Okay… I promise.”

“Thank you. Bye!” Tommy yelled as he raced around the corner, running straight into his friend. “You found him?”

“Yeah, where have you been?”

“Just had something I needed to do.” He saw Merton inhale, about to launch into yet another rant about interfering with their younger counterparts. He held a hand up to stop him. “Don’t worry. I did nothing about the wolf.”

Merton sighed. “Alright, let’s go deal with Mr. Talk-to-the-hand.”

Tommy slung an arm around his buddy’s neck, unaware of the implications of his conversation.
