“Oh, and I do wanna show you *class calendar comes up* that we do have our Mental Health Day comin’ up at the end of the month. If this is your first class of the day, sleep in. If this is your last class of the day, go home early. If it’s stuck right in the middle, well, it sucks to be you.”
“In August of 1964, we’ve got a Destroyer known as the USS Maddox. And what the Maddox is doing gang, is basically providing cover for commando raids in the North. Basically, they got all their radar and technical gear, watchin’ and sayin’ ’Ooh, don’t go there, oh, don’t go there.’ And what happens is that, as they’re sitting there on August 2nd, 1964, several North Vietnamese PT boats come out and will fire across the bow of the USS Maddox. Why? Well, the Maddox is doing something it ain’t supposed to be doing! Of course, we’re saying ‘Oh, they’re in International Waters’. Mmmmm… not really. But, basically they come out and they say ‘You no supposed to be here! Go away!’ Well, the Maddox radios back ‘We’re under fire.’ We can’t have that, can we? So what hits back at the Defense Department is that the Maddox came under fire from PT boats. To which some guys in the Pentagon are like ‘… Well, yeah.’ Why wouldn’t they? I mean, they’re defending their own territory! But, oh, wait, wait, wait, we gotta do something here. And so what then transpires is that we will send another Destroyer up to help the Maddox. And on August 4th, the Maddox and the new ship – known as the USS Turner-Joy – are in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. It was a dark and stormy night… the seas are heaving and rolling. Clouds cover the sky. Thunder, Rain, Lightning..The radar on the Turner-Joy lights up! (TJ) Bogeys! I think the enemy is coming to get us. Where? There! Maddox, do you see it? (M) Nope! (TJ) I see some stuff, they’re coming! (M) Who is? (TJ) You see ‘em? (M) Nope! – They radio to an aircraft carrier lurking nearby. - (TJ) Send us some jets. We need a sortie to check this out. – The jets come up, they’re flying - I see it, I see it! Fire, Fire! What are we firing at? I dunno, but look the blips! Oh, the blips are gone! No, they’re back! Oh, well, they’re over here! No! Where? What? Who saw it? What? I didn’t see anything? Did you see anything? I didn’t see anything! The guys in the plane are going – Where? Where? Where? The TJ’s going ‘I see it, I see it, I think, maybe. I see it!’ The Maddox is going ‘I dunno, I dunno!’ Dude, what?”
“ ‘… No visual sightings! Have been reported.’ So, we should sit back and wait, now, right? See what actually happens? // Guy: Well, even if they brought out everything in their damn Navy and shot at use – we are in their territory, so… // Well, not according to the Defense Department. We were inn quote unquote International Waters. Because the President will go on television on August 5th, you ready? ‘Last night, I announced to the American people that the North Vietnamese regime had conducted further deliberate ATTACKS against US Naval vessels in International Waters. And I, therefore, directed air action against gun boats and supporting facilities in these…’ This is the FIFTH! This is less than 24 hours after the first thing happened! There was one guy in these messages that said ‘IT COULD HAVE BEEN WHALES!’ Because the Gulf of Tonkin is on the migration path for such and such kind of whale! And Johnson said ‘I don’t care if they were whales. I don’t care if they fired at whales. We are goin’ in.This becomes the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. What happened? No one is quite sure, but it will be enough to start doing some things.”
“Why did I name your folder ‘Grandma’s Nightshirt’? When the Tonkin Gulf Resolution reached Johnson, he said ‘That’s great. I got it. I got Grandma’s nightshirt.’ What does that mean, Lyndon? ‘Well, when my grandma went to bed she wore a nightshirt that went from her neck to her toes. It covered everything.’ The Tonkin Gulf Resolution will cover everything.
