Fucking fuck I hate Capstone.
I started out with an idea about how Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's differing views on early 20th century Spiritualism played a significant role in social reactions to Spiritualism, but my professor shot that one down before I could even actually present it to any sort of extent. So. After fuming about that for a while, I resorted to a topic that he suggested and I tweaked a little- How ACD's depression effected his his belief in Spiritualism which in turn effected his writing style,a s evident from the shift from the ever logical Sherlock Holmes to his later workis about faeries and seances.
We spent class on Thursday, all 2.5 hours of it, without a break, watching as he systematically slaughtered all 13 of our thesis ideas. Probably half of which HE GAVE TO US AS SUGGESTIONS. After this class, several of us went out and got smashingly drunk. I supervised the smashingly drunk people and lived vicariously.
So. Now I need to come up with something new that is a) historically releveant, b) never been done before c) answers the god awful question of 'So What?' (which is stupid, because if you say 'So What?' enough eventually you get to wondering why the hell you're bothering in the first place and why does history even matter and what am I doing with my life and things get depressing from there.
TL;DR: NEED NEW HISTORY CAPSTONE IDEA. SUGGESTIONS?

Date: 2011-09-14 04:38 am (UTC)So, is it the aspect of spirtualism that you're more into for this, or ACD or Houdini? If the latter, I think I might have something, since I know you're into forensic shows, too.
Anyway, my idea is taking a look at ACD and other early-modern mystery writers and how their use of forensics influenced later writers, and more recently, television production (and you could go into the negative effects the pervasiveness of forensic entertainment has on the modern-day justice system, if you're interested)
Good luck!! =D

Date: 2011-09-14 06:40 am (UTC)It really sucks about having to come up with something that's never been done before, especially considering this is history, which, at least I think so, would make it a lot harder.

Date: 2011-09-14 06:43 am (UTC)And yeah, it's totally annoying. Pretty much everything interesting has been written about. Chances are if it hasn't, I probably don't want to write about it.
