Hnng. DUSTFINGER! As awesome as it was that he sacrificed himself to save Farid, that was just uncool (though better than dying for Gwin).
Oddly enough, I actually didn't really like Farid much before I started reading Inkspell - now I think he's awesome. As soon as I hit Chapter 1 I liked Farid. He was just kind of there in Inkheart and I was, well, much more focused on Paul Bettany in the movie!verse (and it pisses me off that they ended the movie in such a way that it's not easy to imagine them ever having a sequel, since Dustfinger went back at the end of the movie and Orpheus didn't read him back) but, yes. I am a sucker for mentor/protege relationships. (*cough*Jason/Spinelli (I have very annoying plot ideas in which Jason and Spin replace Dust/Faird, btw), Batman/Robin, Constantine/Chas, Real Genius, Sherlock Holmes...*cough*) And then Farid finding Dustfinger in the Inkworld, that whole chapter was awesome. And then being jealous of Roxane and Jehan, not wanting to share Dustfinger. And then swearing by everything he feared that he wouldn't let Dustfinger die... And I am fairly certain he may be the first character in any book I've ever read to rank staying with his mentor over going away with the girl.
I'm already itching to start reading Inkdeath. And really hoping there's a happy ending somewhere in this.
Now that I've read the books, a lot of my opinions on characters have changed. Resa is much less annoying in the books and so is Mo. There's a lot less hating going on between Mo and Dustfinger - granted they don't really see much of each other in this one, and Dustfinger is taking all his hatred out on Fenoglio nowadays. Pretty much everyone is less annoying in the books, actually. And Farid and Meggie are cute together, too (eve though I've apparently abandoned the Mo/Dustfinger idea in favor of Dustfinger/Farid, but for a change, I actually like the canon pairings, too!). Roxane, however, is kind of annoying. A bit, maybe a lot, hm. I especially didn't like her for blaming Farid for Dustfinger's death. But then they didn't really like each other all along. The whole cloned-Cosimo thing was weird. And the book of immortality thing was odd, too.
But, yes.
